Detailed Analysis
Q1: Aston Martin and Pérez Crash Out Early
The opening segment of qualifying in the principality is always a frantic affair as drivers scramble to find clean air on the narrow 3.337 km street circuit. The soft tyre compound was the universal choice, and lap times tumbled rapidly as rubber was laid down.
In a shocking turn of events, the Aston Martin team suffered an absolute disaster. Neither Fernando Alonso nor Lance Stroll could find any rhythm around the tight barriers. Alonso ended the session in a dismal 21st place with a best time of 1:15.349, while Stroll was even slower, posting a 1:16.061 to qualify dead last.
Joining them in an early exit was Sergio Pérez, whose qualifying struggles continued in the Cadillac F1 Team car. The Mexican veteran was unable to escape the drop zone, finishing 18th (1:14.747), while his teammate Valtteri Bottas could only manage 20th (1:15.283). The Haas pairing of Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman were also knocked out, placing 17th and 19th respectively, alongside Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto in 16th.
At the front of the pack, Charles Leclerc set the early pace, leading the session with a 1:13.293, followed closely by Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Q2: Williams and Colapinto Miss Out on Shootout
As the track continued to evolutionize, the battle to reach the top-10 shootout intensified. Max Verstappen asserted his dominance in this segment, flying to a 1:12.499 to lead Andrea Kimi Antonelli by just over two-tenths.
The cut-off for Q3 was incredibly tight. Ultimately, Williams suffered a double elimination, with Alexander Albon qualifying 11th (1:13.787) and Carlos Sainz just 0.028 seconds behind him in 12th (1:13.815).
Nico Hülkenberg put in a valiant effort for Audi but was eliminated in 13th with a 1:13.902. Alpine's Franco Colapinto (14th, 1:13.995) and RB's rookie Arvid Lindblad (15th, 1:14.248) were the final drivers to miss out on the Q3 shootout.
Q3: Antonelli Wins the Pole in Sector 2
The final 12-minute shootout for pole position boiled down to an absolute classic between the championship leader and the reigning world champion.
The pole position was ultimately decided in the tight and twisty Sector 2, which runs from Mirabeau down through the Grand Hotel Hairpin, Portier, the Tunnel, and into the Chicane. On their final flying laps, Max Verstappen was absolutely supreme in Sector 1, registering a blistering 18.827-second split, which was 0.107 seconds faster than Andrea Kimi Antonelli's 18.934. Verstappen was also slightly quicker in Sector 3 (19.083 vs 19.128).
However, Antonelli produced a sector of pure magic through the middle part of the lap. The Mercedes driver stopped the clocks at 33.989 seconds in Sector 2—a massive 0.195 seconds faster than Verstappen's 34.184. This extraordinary gap in the technical section of the track was more than enough to offset Verstappen's advantages elsewhere, granting Antonelli pole position by a razor-thin 0.043 seconds.
Q3 Sector Split Comparison
| Driver | Sector 1 | Sector 2 | Sector 3 | Best Q3 Time | Gap to Pole |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) | 18.934s | 33.989s | 19.128s | 1:12.051 | — |
| Max Verstappen (Red Bull) | 18.827s | 34.184s | 19.083s | 1:12.094 | +0.043s |
| Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) | 19.103s | 33.957s | 19.219s | 1:12.279 | +0.228s |
| Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) | 19.042s | 34.035s | 19.274s | 1:12.351 | +0.300s |
Lewis Hamilton also excelled in Sector 2, setting the absolute fastest split of the session with an incredible 33.957. Unfortunately, the seven-time world champion lost too much ground in Sector 1 (19.103) and Sector 3 (19.219), settling for third on the grid. He did, however, achieve a major psychological victory by out-qualifying his teammate Charles Leclerc by 0.072 seconds on Leclerc's home soil.
Behind the top four, Isack Hadjar turned heads with a superb fifth place (1:12.434) for Red Bull, comfortably beating George Russell's Mercedes (1:12.445) and Oscar Piastri's McLaren (1:12.624). Lando Norris had a frustrating session to qualify eighth, ahead of Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and Liam Lawson (RB), who rounded out the top ten.
