Silverstone Masterclass: Antonelli Edges Leclerc for British GP Pole as Mercedes Continues Qualifying Sweep

In a thrilling qualifying session for the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his fifth pole position of the season. The Mercedes sophomore produced a dazzling 1:28.111 lap in the final moments of Q3, edging out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by a mere 0.175 seconds. The result keeps Mercedes’ perfect qualifying record intact for 2026, with the Silver Arrows claiming all nine pole positions of the season so far (five for Antonelli and four for George Russell).

Silverstone’s high-speed curves provided a spectacular backdrop for a session characterized by tight margins at the front and a catastrophic double-elimination for Aston Martin at the back. While Mercedes and Ferrari fought a private battle for the front row, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar stole the headlines by outqualifying his teammate, three-time world champion Max Verstappen, to take fifth on the grid.

Key Highlights

  • Mercedes Dominance Continues: Mercedes extends its flawless 2026 qualifying streak to nine consecutive pole positions, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli taking his fifth of the year.
  • Ferrari’s Front-Row Threat: Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualified second and third respectively, demonstrating Ferrari’s significant threat on high-speed, high-downforce circuits.
  • Aston Martin Disaster: In one of the biggest shocks of the season, both Aston Martin cars were eliminated in Q1, with Lance Stroll qualifying 21st and home-favorite Fernando Alonso qualifying a dismal 22nd and last.
  • Hadjar Outperforms Verstappen: Red Bull’s rookie sensation Isack Hadjar went fastest in Q1 and eventually qualified fifth, beating Max Verstappen in seventh by 0.147 seconds.
  • RB Double Q3: Both RB F1 Team drivers reached the top ten, with Arvid Lindblad securing ninth and Liam Lawson tenth.
  • Audi Midfield Charge: Gabriel Bortoleto narrowly missed Q3, qualifying 11th on Audi’s continued push toward the top ten, while teammate Nico Hülkenberg lined up 13th.

Detailed Session Analysis

Q1: Red Bull Rookie Shocks, Aston Martin Collapses

The first segment of qualifying began on a dry but cool Silverstone track, where teams immediately headed out on the Soft compound tyre to beat any potential weather changes.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar immediately set the timing screens alight, posting a superb 1:29.276 to finish the session fastest of all. His performance was matched by Liam Lawson in the RB F1 Team car, who clocked a 1:29.300 to go second. Behind them, Charles Leclerc, Nico Hülkenberg, and Max Verstappen rounded out the top five, all separated by less than three-tenths of a second.

The major story of Q1, however, was the dramatic collapse of Aston Martin. Operating on home soil, the Silverstone-based squad suffered a catastrophic setup or operational failure. Neither Lance Stroll nor Fernando Alonso could find any grip on their Soft-tyre runs. Stroll could only manage a 1:32.863 to place 21st, while Alonso ended up dead last with a 1:33.025—over three seconds off Hadjar's pace.

Joining them in an early exit were Williams' Alexander Albon (16th), Haas' Esteban Ocon (17th), and the Cadillac duo of Valtteri Bottas (18th) and Sergio Pérez (20th), alongside Alpine’s Franco Colapinto (19th).

Q2: Mercedes Asserts Control

As the track rubbered in, the lap times plummeted in Q2. Mercedes, which had kept a relatively low profile in Q1, showed its true hand. Andrea Kimi Antonelli became the first driver to dip into the 1:28s, recording a 1:28.493 to top the session.

Charles Leclerc remained his closest challenger, posting a 1:28.626, just 0.133 seconds adrift. Lewis Hamilton made it two Ferraris in the top three with a 1:28.864, while Austrian GP pole-sitter George Russell took fourth.

The battle to make the Q3 cutoff was fierce. Gabriel Bortoleto drove an exceptional lap in his Audi to register a 1:29.461, but missed out on the top ten by a agonizing 0.032 seconds to Liam Lawson. Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Nico Hülkenberg (Audi), Oliver Bearman (Haas), and Carlos Sainz (Williams) were also eliminated, with Sainz struggling to find a clean balance, finishing over two seconds off the pace in 15th.

Q3: Sector-by-Sector Pole Battle

The final shootout was a masterclass in precision. Under intense pressure, Andrea Kimi Antonelli put together a flawless final lap. To understand where the pole position was won and lost, we compare the sector splits of the top four drivers on their best Q3 runs.

Q3 Sector Time Comparison

Driver Sector 1 (s) Sector 2 (s) Sector 3 (s) Total Time Gap to Pole (s)
Andrea Kimi Antonelli 28.348 35.521 24.242 1:28.111
Charles Leclerc 28.292 35.614 24.380 1:28.286 +0.175
Lewis Hamilton 28.345 35.749 24.364 1:28.458 +0.347
George Russell 28.303 35.629 24.549 1:28.481 +0.370
  • Sector 1 (Start/Finish to Turn 5 / Aintree): Charles Leclerc was the class of the field in the opening sector, utilizing the Ferrari’s strong traction out of the Loop to set a 28.292. George Russell was a close second (28.303), while Antonelli was the slowest of the top four (28.348), losing 0.056 seconds to Leclerc.
  • Sector 2 (Copse, Maggotts, Becketts, Chapel, and Hangar Straight): Through Silverstone's legendary high-speed complexes, Antonelli and his Mercedes W17 were peerless. The young Italian carried immense minimum speed through Copse and Becketts to record a blistering 35.521. Leclerc was his closest pursuer but still lost 0.093 seconds (35.614), while Hamilton struggled through this section, losing 0.228 seconds to Antonelli.
  • Sector 3 (Stowe, Vale, and Club): Antonelli cemented his pole position in the final braking zones and the slow-speed Club corner. He stopped the clock at 24.242, beating Hamilton by 0.122 seconds and Leclerc by 0.138 seconds.

While Leclerc held the advantage early on, Antonelli’s supremacy through Sectors 2 and 3 was the deciding factor, granting him a comfortable 0.175-second margin at the line.

Midfield Highlights & Underperformers

Isack Hadjar vs. Max Verstappen

Perhaps the most intriguing storyline outside of the pole fight was the intra-team battle at Red Bull. Isack Hadjar has been growing in confidence, and on Silverstone's high-speed layout, he took a historic scalp. Hadjar’s Q3 lap of 1:28.746 earned him fifth on the grid, outqualifying Max Verstappen (seventh, 1:28.893) by 0.147 seconds.

The sector data shows that while Verstappen was slightly quicker through the high-speed Sector 2 (35.789 vs. Hadjar's 35.831), Hadjar was far superior in the technical Sector 3, where he gained 0.169 seconds over the Dutchman (24.473 vs. 24.642). This marks a significant milestone in Hadjar's young career and puts immense pressure on Red Bull to manage their driver dynamics.

Double Q3 for RB F1 Team

The RB F1 Team enjoyed one of their best Saturdays of the season. Arvid Lindblad put in a spectacular performance to qualify ninth with a 1:29.305, showing remarkable poise in front of his home crowd. Liam Lawson backed up his rookie teammate to claim tenth on the grid (1:29.716), giving the Italian-based squad a strong double-points-scoring opportunity for Sunday's Grand Prix.
