Masterclass in the Ardennes: Lewis Hamilton Storms to Record-Breaking Spa Pole
In a sensational qualifying session at the power-dominated Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Lewis Hamilton delivered a masterclass to claim his 93rd career pole position for the 2020 Belgian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver set a breathtaking lap time of 1:41.252, obliterating the previous track record by over half a second and finishing more than half a second clear of teammate Valtteri Bottas. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was a whisker behind Bottas in third, while Renault's Daniel Ricciardo put in an outstanding performance to claim fourth on the grid.
Key Highlights
- Track Record Smashed: Lewis Hamilton's pole-winning time of 1:41.252 set a new official track record at Spa-Francorchamps.
- Chadwick Boseman Dedication: Immediately after stepping out of his W11, Hamilton dedicated his pole position to the late actor Chadwick Boseman, who had tragically passed away the day before.
- Renault's Straight-Line Rocket: Daniel Ricciardo qualified a brilliant fourth, showcasing the Renault RS20's exceptional straight-line speed by going fastest of all in Sectors 1 and 3.
- Ferrari Disaster: In a shocking display of their 2020 power deficit, both Scuderia Ferrari cars failed to reach Q3. Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel qualified a dismal 13th and 14th respectively, a year after Leclerc had taken pole and victory at the same track.
- Q1 Eliminations: Kimi Räikkönen, Romain Grosjean, Antonio Giovinazzi, Nicholas Latifi, and Kevin Magnussen were eliminated in the first segment.
Detailed Analysis
Q1: Mercedes Sets the Benchmark, Ferrari Barely Survives
The first qualifying segment began under overcast skies with the threat of rain always present in the Belgian hills. Mercedes immediately showed their hand, with Lewis Hamilton posting a 1:42.323 and Valtteri Bottas a 1:42.534 on the Soft compound tyres. The big story of Q1, however, was Ferrari's catastrophic lack of pace. Both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc struggled to find grip and straight-line speed. It took a late run for both drivers to scrape through to Q2, with Vettel finishing Q1 in 13th and Leclerc in 15th, ahead of the eliminated Alfa Romeo of Kimi Räikkönen by less than a tenth of a second.
Kevin Magnussen had a difficult session, going wide at Stavelot on his final flyer and finishing last in 20th. His teammate Romain Grosjean also failed to progress, qualifying 17th.
Q2: Red Bull and Renault Challenge, Ferrari Knocked Out
In Q2, Mercedes opted to run the Medium tyre to secure their starting tyre for Sunday's race, with Hamilton recording a 1:42.014. Valtteri Bottas was just a tenth behind. Red Bull's Max Verstappen also progressed comfortably on the Medium compound with a 1:42.473.
Alexander Albon had a very strong Q2 run on the Soft tyre, setting a 1:42.193 to go second quickest in the segment. Renault's Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon also demonstrated severe pace, comfortably securing their Q3 slots.
For Ferrari, the nightmare was confirmed. Charles Leclerc could only manage a 1:42.996 to qualify 13th, while Sebastian Vettel was over two-tenths slower in 14th (1:43.261). Their straight-line speed deficit was glaringly obvious through the Kemmel Straight. George Russell put in another respectable "Mr. Saturday" performance for Williams, qualifying 15th with a 1:43.468.
Q3: Hamilton's Middle-Sector Domination Secures Pole
In the final top-10 shootout, Lewis Hamilton put on an absolute driving exhibition. On his first flying run, he set a 1:41.451, which was already comfortably fast enough for pole. However, on his second run, he went even faster, stopping the clock at a mind-boggling 1:41.252.
A sector-by-sector breakdown reveals exactly where Hamilton won the pole. While high-speed Sectors 1 and 3 were closely contested, Hamilton absolutely decimated the field in the twisty, downforce-heavy middle sector (Sector 2).
Sector Time Analysis (Best Q3 Laps)
- Lewis Hamilton (1:41.252): Sector 1: 30.421 | Sector 2: 42.466 | Sector 3: 28.365
- Valtteri Bottas (1:41.763): Sector 1: 30.637 | Sector 2: 42.692 | Sector 3: 28.434
- Max Verstappen (1:41.778): Sector 1: 30.446 | Sector 2: 43.046 | Sector 3: 28.286
- Daniel Ricciardo (1:42.061): Sector 1: 30.309 | Sector 2: 43.594 | Sector 3: 28.158
Renault's low-drag setup was highly effective. Daniel Ricciardo was faster than anyone else in the high-speed Sector 1 (30.309) and Sector 3 (28.158), showing incredible straight-line speed. However, he lost over 1.1 seconds to Hamilton in Sector 2 alone, which restricted him to 4th on the grid. Verstappen was incredibly close to Bottas for second, missing out on a front-row start by a mere 0.015 seconds.
Alexander Albon secured 5th on the grid, just ahead of Esteban Ocon. Carlos Sainz qualified a respectable 7th for McLaren, ahead of the Racing Points of Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll, with Lando Norris rounding out the top 10.
